Welsh Springer Spaniel Artwork
The most well-recognized artwork associated with Welsh Springer Spaniels is from Maud Earl and Walter A. Weber, two 20th century artists. Maude Earl's 1906 portrait of Ch Longmynd Myfanwy and Ch Longmynd Megan is on the cover of 'The Welsh Springer Spaniel' by William Pferd, and it also appeared on the Westminster KC catalog in 1999. There has been speculation that there was some artistic license taken with the representation of the Longmynd dogs, since they appear in the artwork to be more stylized than in a photo from the time period. The Earl dogs seem to have a blocky, almost pointer-ish headpiece, not the more tapered muzzle that the breed standard calls for. She also produced several other Welsh Springer portraits that are available online, and these seem to be somewhat more typey for the breed. The ubiquitous Walter A Weber print of a Welsh Springer Spaniel holding a pheasant was originally published by National Geographic in a 1947 edition of the magazine for an article about different breeds of dogs. This is a lovely and representative view of the Welshie-not exaggerated and worthwhile for its historical and aesthetic value.
Books About Welsh Springer Spaniels
People interested in Welshies always lament the lack of available books about the breed. The Breed Standard and a photo of a representative Welshie is provided in the AKC Book of Dogs, and in other "reference-type" books. There is a brief mention of the breed in the AKC Dog Encyclopedia, but there have only been two American books published about the Welsh Springer Spaniel since the mid-1970s. Most books available about the breed are difficult to find--both of the American volumes are out of print and the other books are British or Dutch and some of them are out of print, also. Here are some books that you can hunt up online - they make wonderful gifts and should give all die-hard Welshie lovers a photo-fix and a helping of history.
I have divided them into US and UK/Other publications since there may be some searching required to locate the club-related publications, and significant costs in some cases.
